GLOSSARY TERM
What is Nofollow Link?
Definition
A link with rel="nofollow" attached, telling search engines not to pass ranking signal through to the destination. Used for sponsored content, user-generated links, and untrusted sources.
Why it Matters for AI Search
In 2019 Google switched from treating nofollow as a strict directive to a "hint." Most nofollow links still don't pass equity, but search engines may follow them for crawl discovery. Use rel="sponsored" for paid links and rel="ugc" for user-generated content for accurate signal.
