GLOSSARY TERM

What is 301 Redirect?

Definition

An HTTP status code indicating that a URL has permanently moved to a new location. Browsers and search engines follow the redirect and update their records to the new URL.

Why it Matters for AI Search

301 redirects pass nearly all link equity from the old URL to the new one. Use them when consolidating pages, migrating domains, or removing duplicate content. Long redirect chains (more than two hops) leak ranking signal and slow page load.
