The honest truth about Google AI Overviews is that nobody — including Google — fully understands which sources get cited and why. The retrieval and ranking happen inside a model, not a deterministic algorithm. That said, after enough trial-and-error you can see patterns.
Sites that get cited consistently tend to share six traits: clear question-and-answer formatting (often as FAQ schema), atomic paragraphs (one fact per paragraph beats one paragraph per topic), comprehensive structured data, semantic HTML with proper heading hierarchy, dates and authorship visible to humans and machines, and topical depth — Google rarely cites a site for a query that's adjacent to its main subject. A WordPress blog about cooking will not get cited about Core Web Vitals no matter how good the post is.
