GLOSSARY TERM

What is Open Graph?

Definition

A protocol (originally from Facebook) using <meta property="og:..."> tags to control how URLs render when shared on social media. Standard tags include og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url.

Why it Matters for AI Search

Without Open Graph tags, links shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, or iMessage render as plain text — which gets ~3x less engagement than a card with image and description. Open Graph is also increasingly read by AI engines for content summarization.
